Fort McMurray investigation nets nearly $20,000 in cocaine, two charged

Fort McMurray…ALERT has wrapped up a drug trafficking investigation with charges against two people and nearly $20,000 in cocaine.

On May 14, Wood Buffalo’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU-Wood Buffalo), assisted by Wood Buffalo RCMP Detachment’s General Duty A Watch and Police Dog Services, executed search warrants on a unit at 2-302 Parson’s Creek Drive and a vehicle.

In total, police seized 191 grams of cocaine, valued at nearly $20,000 on the street, as well as three grams of cannabis marihuana, $7,000 cash and other drug trafficking paraphernalia.

“Drugs and the people involved in their distribution threaten the safety of communities across Alberta,” said CFSEU-Wood Buffalo’s Sgt. Irv Heide. “With help from our partners, we will continue to target drug trafficking in the Wood Buffalo region to ensure our residents’ safety and well-being.”

As a result of this investigation, the following people are charged:

  • Derek SCHOFIELD, age 24, is charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, driving a motor vehicle while unauthorized, and two counts of failure to comply with a probation order.
  • Vanessa JACOBS, age 25, is charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

CFSEU-Wood Buffalo is reminding the public to call its gang information hotline at (780) 788-GANG to report any information they may have that would assist the police in its crackdown on gang and organized crime.

Made up of RCMP members, CFSEU-Wood Buffalo is an ALERT team established and funded by the Government of Alberta to bring together the province’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources to tackle serious and organized crime. Over 400 municipal police, RCMP and sheriffs work for ALERT.
