Medicine Hat… Just over a kilogram of methamphetamine was seized in Medicine Hat in what is believed to be the city’s largest meth seizure. ALERT, Medicine Hat Police, Lethbridge Police, and RCMP were involved in the investigation.
ALERT Medicine Hat’s organized crime team made the seizure in the early morning hours of December 8, 2017, after a planned vehicle stop was initiated just inside city limits on Highway 3. In the trunk of the rental vehicle investigators found 1.02 kilograms of meth and 226 grams of cocaine, worth an estimated $125,000.
ALERT believes the drugs were being transported into the city by way of Lethbridge. The driver of the vehicle, a 47-year-old Medicine Hat woman, was arrested and a 28-year-old male associate was simultaneously arrested in Lethbridge.
The short-term investigation began in early December following community concerns related to methamphetamine trafficking.
“Meth is a horrible drug that has certainly impacted this community. Any effort we can undertake to get this drug off the street helps ensure Medicine Hat remains a safe, healthy and vibrant city,” said Staff Sgt. Cory Both, ALERT Medicine Hat.
The meth seizure is believed to be Medicine Hat’s largest. To date in 2017, the ALERT team has seized 3.25 kilograms of methamphetamine – more than doubling the previous year’s total of 1.47 kilograms.
Shonna Scriven, a 47-year-old woman from Medicine Hat, was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking (x 2) and possession of proceeds of crime. She remains in custody and is expected to appear in Medicine Hat court on December 14.
Michael Abate, a 28-year-old man from Lethbridge, was charged with drug trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime. He remains in custody and is due in Lethbridge court on December 13.
