Woman charged after ALERT seizes khat and cash in Fort McMurray

June 12, 2012

Fort McMurray…One woman is facing numerous forgery and drug-related charges after ALERT wrapped up a drug trafficking investigation in Fort McMurray.

On June 8, Wood Buffalo’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU-Wood Buffalo), assisted by the Wood Buffalo RCMP Detachment, executed a search warrant at a residence in the Beaconhill area. As a result, police seized eight kilograms of khat. Khat contains chemicals found in Schedule III & IV of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and is therefore illegal to possess.

The team also seized $22,000 in cash, drug trafficking paraphernalia, and numerous foreign identification cards.

“Drugs are harmful to the community,” said CFSEU-Wood Buffalo’s Sgt. Irv Heide. “While we are pleased with this seizure, we always know there is more work to be done and will continue to collaborate with our partners to keep our community safe.”

Saida Abdikarim MOHAMED, age 39, is charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of importation of a controlled substance, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and 19 counts of forgery.

To report suspicious activity in your community, contact police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). CFSEU-Wood Buffalo is also reminding the public to call its gang information hotline at (780) 788-GANG to report any information that might assist the police in its crackdown on gang and organized crime.

Made up of RCMP members, CFSEU-Wood Buffalo is an ALERT team established and funded by the Government of Alberta to bring together the province’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources to tackle serious and organized crime. Over 400 municipal police, RCMP and sheriffs work for ALERT.
